TRUSTEES PUSH BACK PROPOSED BOND ELECTION

Bo80 Taylor ISD Board President James "Bo" Stiles (left) and other trustees voted Monday night to pass on a proposed May 10th school board election and instead they pushed for a November vote.

By a unanimous vote, trustees chose to go to the public in November and ask for their support for a $42.1 million bond package to build a new high school.

The Board will continue to discuss proposed plans which call for either a three or four grade campus ... at a site yet to be determined.

"The trustees and the Administration agreed that we needed more time to show the community the merits of the proposed bond package," said Taylor ISD Superintendent Dr. Bruce Scott.

One question the Board will continue to review will be the proposed building site.  Both a north (near Taylor Middle School) and a southwest (off FM 973 and next to the proposed East Williamson County Higher Education Center) have been discussed; with parents and taxpayers weighing in on both locations.

The vote came after three Town Hall Meetings and several comments from taxpayers and parents.  In the end, the trustees agreed with a the consensus reached by a 24-member Community Facilities Committee, during their 14 months of work.

"We know that growth is coming and we know we have capacity issues right now at several campuses," said Stiles.  "The problem is that we need at least $40 million to address our needs. We have to add 1000 more seats and fix a number of concerns at the current high school due to its age and a State mandate for additional Science labs for senior classes."
