| THS TO DEFEND STATE ACDEC CROWN |
THS Academic Decathlon Advisor Vicki Rowe has confirmed that her young group of "scholars" was named Regional Champions in the Small School Division last weekend at San Antonio's Sandra Day O'Connor High School and will be defending their current State title later this month.
SERIOUS INTENT -- This year's "reloaded" THS Academic Decathlon squad is filling big shoes. They were Small School Regional Champs last weekend in San Antonio to qualify to defend their current State title. The team consists of: (Back row) Conoley Reinhardt, Drew Weise, Zach Lindsay, Rebekah Murphy and Brandon Dupy. (Front row) Jared Deloney, Travis Carpenter, Jennifer Townsend and Stephen Svatek. (Photo by Larry Robbins) Taylor's current AcDec squad has produced another Regional Academic Decathlon title and recorded a total score of 34,717 points, according to legendary Advisor Vicki Rowe. "I have just received word that we are the Regional Champs and are moving on to State," said an excited Rowe. "We have not received individual scores as yet, but it's a great day to be a DUCK." Some sort of computer glitch caused the cancellation of the customary awards assembly and has tied up the release of the individual scores, according to Rowe. But the main concern is that despite all of the experience that graduated from Taylor's three-time defending state championship squad, the Ducks continue to impress. While they have no medals as yet, the THS AcDec squad finds itself in familiar territory. Although only Delony, Murphy and Lindsay are returning from last year's winning team, this year's group is showing constant promise. Their solid depth seems to provide the spark needed to fill gaps left by graduation. Yes, Rowe is 'very proud" of her young scholars, but she added that despite being new to the game, the THS squad still carries the tradition of a champion and the reputation of a good friend. "At the competition, our team is treated with respect and maybe some envy," added Rowe. "They like us." So far, those characteristics and a torrid work ethic has carried Taylor High School to five State titles since 2001 and they are the reigning Small School champs for 2007, 2008, and 2009. In the prestigious ranks of the State Academic Decathlon events, those honors are unmatched in recent history. The squad returns to San Antonio to bid for a 4th straight title February 25-28 at San Antonio College. Their science is Chemistry and their Super Quiz event will center around the French Revolution. Rowe says her squad is aiming for that crown and is "working seven days a week to make it happen." This is Rowe's 7th year to serve as advisor of the THS AcDec team and it's her sixth time to prepare them for the State meet. |
