Greetings,
Duck University is an after- school program that provides a success recipe because it is active, collaborative, and meets students needs and interests. Students can explore skill and enrichment adventures in exciting, challenging ways extending classroom academic learning. Use of best practices instruction and attention to individual learning styles is evident in cooperative groups, K-W-L charts, and a project based approach..
In May of 2004, Taylor ISD was awarded a 21st Century Community Learning Grant. The grant was for 1.5 million dollars over a three year time period. The grant is funded by the federal government, with funds being channeled down through the Texas Education Agency.
Duck University is designed to provide after-school services to Taylor ISD students in kindergarten through 8th grade each Monday--Thursday that school is in session. The students will receive academic tutoring to help them be successful in school and on the TAKS test; homework help and enrichment activities that range from yoga and sports to recorder lessons and arts and crafts. Transportation home is provided for students.
Academic enrichment is provided by classroom teachers and community volunteers. Electives are provided by the TISD Staff, community members, community volunteers and grant partners.
